Our History

What is the history behind AJ Civil Projects & how has the business changed over the past decade?

The Early Years

Alan Johnson was born in the Nambucca Valley and lived in Nambucca Heads for over 30 years. His father Garry had a successful plumbing business there, so as soon as he was allowed to leave school at the age 15, he started as a plumbing apprentice with him. Over the years, they started moving towards the civil side of plumbing, which is constructing sewer, stormwater and water mains. So, he gathered experience early in his career.

1998

Along with his uncle Ken, who helped to teach him this side of plumbing, they started taking on larger projects around the Nambucca area. Alan could see a niche market and increased demand for this aspect of plumbing and decided to branch out and launch AJ Pipelines & Construction Pty Ltd in July 1998.

The First Contract

Alan’s first contract was to construct the stormwater mains and associated works for the upgrade of the Pacific Highway and the Arthur Street overpass in front of the Park Beach Plaza. He purchased his first 20-tonne excavator for the project, which was a huge step at the time, but proved to be a good one. They were then awarded a contract with Coffs Harbour City Council to construct the re-use mains from Coffs Harbour to Woolgoolga stage 1 and have continued to successfully complete contracts with them to this day.

2002

Alan Johnson decided to move the family to Coffs Harbour, as all of the work was around the area, and he has enjoyed living in this great place ever since.

Name Change To AJ Civil Projects

Over the past decade or two we have completed many projects that are civil construction rather than pipe laying projects, so we have decided to change the name of the business to AJ Civil Projects which covers all aspect of civil works. Only the name has changed, the company structure remains the same.  We are looking forward to another successful few decades in business to add to our 20-year milestone we’re celebrating this year.
